Skin Rejuvenation
When you think about the sun, it conjures up serene, evocative images of sitting on white beaches with your toes in the sand, sipping colourful cocktails with exotic names and coming home with a deep, rich suntan. The short-term effects of the sun, the primary building block for life on Earth, are evident and obvious, but prolonged or even transient exposure can be responsible for damaged skin, premature wrinkling and a decrease in the production of collagen, making the skin feel coarse and listless. This is known as photo-ageing.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. Essentially, it heats the damaged collagen cells under the skin and regenerates them using pure, filtered, narrow-beam red light, fundamentally improving the complexion and surface tension of the skin, and by removing the visible signs of aging, diffused redness and sun damage. All parts of the skin can be treated safely and effectively, dispensing with the need for injections. Uneven pigmentation is also reduced with many female patients suggesting that it becomes easier to apply make up following treatment.
From a scientific standpoint, the light is absorbed into a pigment in the skin called melanin and a protein called haemoglobin. Melanin is found in age spots and haemoglobin is the root cause of diffused redness, and when cells containing high percentages of these substances are targeted with IPL, they can disappear almost instantaneously.
It’s worth noting that IPL skin rejuvenation is not just for sun-damaged skin. With age, the elastin and collagen in the skin diminishes causing fine lines and wrinkles, and almost anyone can be treated.
Treatments
A full-face treatment should take less than 20 minutes and the skin will look rejuvenated after one to three treatments, depending on the severity of the condition and the treatment required. The procedure is painless, although those with darker skin may experience a sensation similar to that of the warming feeling one has after a day spent outside in hot weather.
There is no other post-treatment care required other than a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 for a month following the treatment.
